PAOLA MEI
Paola Mei was born on March 8th 1965 in the north of Italy. Her
great voice, which is not really famous in Italy, has been
recorded beyond the Alps together with Francis Lai and Michel
Legrand on her first CD (Soul Souvenir) and released here in
Italy on our label. Soul Souvenir is a collection of
"evergreen" mostly from famous soundtracks in which she shows
off a unique voice. From LOVE STORY to THE SECOND TIME (from the
movie Bilitis), from STORMY WEATHER to PUSH IT TO THE
LIMIT (Scarface), to Chaplin's LIMELIGHT. Paola displays an
extraordinary technique and feeling, and skillfully follows the
steps of the great Italian singers such as Mina. Yet, her
approach to the singing is relatively recent. Only after
1988, when she met the producer Claudio Pagano, she decided to
commit herself in studying hard on what she already had thanks
to mother nature: the voice The results arrived soon: she
won a scholarship and attended seminars held by Mal Waldrom and
Steve Lacy; she also took part of Francesca Olivieri's Gospel
Chorus from Luigi Bonafede's jazz quintet. She has written
songs and even taught singing. Eventually, after many tests and
disappointing experiences, she approached the record industry.
In 1991, during a concert at Ivrea, she was noticed by a famous
Swiss producer who convinced her to move to Paris and make
a record with Francis Lai and Michel Legrand (included in the
album). Everything seemed to work out well but the record wasn't
released at the end due to first of all contractual and
then artistic and personal difficulties until 1995, when the
record finally was released by Interbeat Italy. Beforehand, we
were talking about her extraordinary voice which has no
preconstituted scheme and is free to fly over the music waves.
She says of herself "free" which means free of having no
preconstituted scheme, choosing properly her repertoire, opening
herself, letting people drag her, trusting people
completely and fullfilling herself in the music. SOUL SOUVENIR:
soul memories. It's an ironic title if we think of the troubles
she had before the product was released ... But it also
points out the content of the product: a series of immortal
melodies. Such classical songs together with the best memories
cannot anything but be hidden in eachone's soul. Paola's
voice will take all of them out of you: THAT'S FOR SURE! |
