BACK TO ARARAT
New York, any day in the not too distant future.
Dr. Jonathan Broll, a bouncy bespectacled young industrial chemist doing research on special kinds of paint for the gigantic Max Painter Inc., discovers a fluid which, applied to any surface above an altitude of 2000 m, solidifies and offers protection from radioactivity and ecological calamities.
The official world of science is sceptical and incredulous, all the more so in that previous “discoveries” of the eccentric young Dr. Broll have all proved to be unfounded.
The only one willing to believe him seems to be his eternal fiancée, the dreamy Rosemarie Bannister, primary school teacher in a wretched school in Harlem. And it is thanks to her that Jonathan, foreseeing the imminent world’s end as a consequence of radioactivity, viruses, aids, ecological catastrophes, epidemics and suchlike, manages to have entrusted to him, with the aim of safeguarding the race, a raggedy group of children, Rosemarie’s pupils, from the poorest families in the ghetto (Porto Ricans, Jamaicans, Chinese, etc. etc. ).
Like a new Noah with an old double-decker bus for an ark, Jonathan sets out with Rosemarie and the colourful and noisy bunch of children, an in the surrealistic dawn they leave behind them a cold spectral New York, destination ARARAT.
During the long fascinating voyage, each of them rediscovers those values that seemed to have been lost forever, God seems to guide them on their way and, on arrival, in the enormous efforts involved in building the dome of salvation.
Life goes on peacefully inside the great construction.
The greenhouses yield their first fruit and even a bastard puppy is born. Until…
Until one night the little community is awakened by flahing lights on the horizon. Awestruck, the occupants of the dome cling to Jonathan and Rosemarie and impotently watch the terrible event.
In the days that follow, the radio signals grow weaker and weaker and finally disappear.
Will the new mankind be born within this dome?

New York, un giorno qualunque del nostro futuro prossimo.
Un giovane chimico, l’occhialuto e dinoccolato dottor Jonathan Broll nel corso delle sue ricerche su particolari tipi di vernici, per conto della sua società, la gigantesca Max Painter Inc., scopre una sostanza liquida, che dipinta su qualsiasi cosa oltre i 2000 metri di altezza, solidifica e rende immune da radiazioni di qualsiasi tipo e da calamità ecologiche, tutto ciò che si trovi al suo interno.
Il mondo ufficiale della scienza rimane scettico ed incredulo, anche perché precedenti “scoperte” del giovane e strampalato dottor Broll, si erano dimostrate infondate.
L’unica disposta a credergli, sembra essere la sua eterna fidanzata, la sognante Rosemarie Bannister, insegnante elementare in una misera scuola di Harlem.
Ed è grazie a lei, che il nostro Jonathan, prevedendo una imminente fine dell’umanità, per via di radiazioni, virus, aids, catastrofi ecologiche, epidemie, riesce a farsi affidare, scopo salvaguardi a della razza, uno sparuto gruppo di bambini, allievi di Rosemarie dalle più povere famiglie del ghetto, ( Portoricani, Giamaicani, Cinesi, etc. etc.).
Così come un novello Noè, la cui arca è sostituita da uno sgangherato autobus a due piani, Jonathan, Rosemarie ed il colorato e chiassoso nugolo di marmocchi, lasciano alle loro spalle in un alba surreale, una gelida e spettrale New York, destinazione l’ ARARAT!
Il lungo viaggio è affascinante, ed ognuno riscopre dei valori che sembravano persi per sempre.
Dio sembra guidare il loro cammino, e giunti alla meta, gli enormi sforzi per costruire la cupola della salvezza.
La vita scorre serena all’ interno della grande costruzione.
Le serre danno i primi frutti, ed anche una coppia di cagnolini dà alla luce un simpatico ‘bastardello’, finché………………………………………..
Finché una notte dei bagliori all’orizzonte svegliano la piccola comunità, che impotente, assista attonita al tremendo evento, stringendosi intorno a Jonathan e Rosemarie.
Nei giorni seguenti i segnali radio, diventano sempre più deboli fino a scomparire.
È da questa cupola che nascerà la nuova umanità???
